Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
